We anticipate our analysis will be of interest both to researchers and public agencies focused on the protection of public health. Dark web marketplaces (or “dark markets”) are commercial websites which specialise in trading illicit goods. They are accessible via darknets (e.g., Tor) and vary in specialisation, technology, and primary supported language. Silk Road, the first modern dark marketplace launched in 2011, limited its sales to drugs while other dark marketplaces allow trading of weapons, fake IDs and stolen credit cards1,2. Most marketplaces simply facilitate transactions between buyers and sellers of illicit goods, however some marketplaces act as sellers and sell directly to buyers. Bitcoin is the universally accepted currency on every dark marketplace.
The blockchain analysis firm says blockchain activity shows that at the end of 2002, dark web markets had $1.3 billion in revenue, a substantial decline from $2.6 billion in revenue earned during the previous year. Earlier today, we released our annual research deep dive into pricing trends seen on these dark web marketplaces. In this pricing analysis report, we highlight the common purchase prices for a wide gamut of cybercriminal data and service offerings, and further contextualize the pricing information with our own analysis and historical trending.
How drug buyers and illicit users migrated from Hydra to other darknet markets
This in turn led to political pressure from Senator Chuck Schumer on the US DEA and Department of Justice to shut it down, which they finally did in October 2013 after a lengthy investigation. Silk Road’s use of all of Tor, Bitcoin escrow and feedback systems would set the standard for new darknet markets for the coming years. Dark web marketplaces are a platform for trading illicit products on a small and large scale.
AlphaBay’s marketplace and forum are also available on the darknet I2P. Our study is also unique in that it examines information needs articulated in a non-public forum belonging to the dark web. Needs for disnormative information cannot always be expressed in public forums because messages containing information of this type may be removed by the moderators; besides, most of disnormative information sought by the users is unavailable through public channels. Expressing a need for disnormative information requires anonymity, particularly if the user intentionally breaks the law. As the forums of the dark web enable anonymous use, needs for disnormative information can be expressed freely.

- Year-over-year, Dark Web marketplace revenues at the end of 2021 were about $3.1 billion, but by the end of 2022 they totaled only about $1.5 billion.
- “To me, the question of, do you start looking at specific — and I’ll call them edge cases — things like the dark web? Before you do that, you have to have your security house in order. You have to have built that solid security foundation.”
- Dark markets are commercial websites that use Bitcoin to sell or broker transactions involving drugs, weapons, and other illicit goods.
- Table S2 in Supplementary Information Section S2 reports characteristics of the 31 marketplaces analysed in this paper, including the overall number of users and transaction volume.

Dark marketplaces are also supported by search engines and news websites such as Grams, DeepDotWeb and darknetlive which aggregate information on all active dark marketplaces25. Following multiple scams, dark marketplaces have begun to rely on escrow systems. Dark marketplaces do not keep buyers’ Bitcoins in local addresses but instead send them to an escrow service. Escrow services can be independent from the dark marketplace or integrated with the dark marketplace; either way users can withdraw their money if the shipment was not delivered. After the buyer’s confirmation of receipt, the escrow service transfers the money to the seller. Professor for addiction research Heino Stöver notes that the shops can be seen as a political statement, advancing drug legalization “from below”.
How to Keep Track of Evolving Darknet Marketplaces
SOCRadar Extended Threat Intelligence platform automatically detects organization or employee data in black markets and alerts relevant users. Only 4% of the users migrate to more than one coexisting marketplace simultaneously after the closure. Figure6b shows that, in 36.4% of the closures considered, it is the one sharing the largest number of common users with the closed marketplace(the probability that users migrate to the marketplace ranked second or the third is 31.8%). Users do not choose to migrate to marketplaces that have fewer common users than the third-ranked marketplace. During the first few months of 2022, business was booming at Hydra Marketplace, the premiere Dark Web destination for cybercrime money laundering and selling narcotics and other illegal goods and services. Yes, they allow us to dismantle illicit websites and go after those responsible for them. But they also enable us to develop actionable intelligence on other websites, criminals, and criminal organizations. And the knowledge we gain from these investigations helps us create more sophisticated investigative tools to shine a brighter light into criminal activity on the DarkNet. Five years after it was torn offline, the resurrected dark web marketplace is clawing its way back to the top of the online underworld. The two charts below show which markets Hydra’s previous counterparties used the most in both of those two time periods.
We refer to this particular culture as a ‘psychedelic assemblage,’ i.e., a local constellation of cultural constructs which frames the experience of drug using and trading. Our investigation reveals the constitutive methods which enable the norming of members’ practices and underpin the emergence of a shared lifeworld which in turn ensures the operability of this cryptomarket. In reality, while the dark web offers greater privacy and can facilitate more open criminality, just about everything on the dark web can be found on the clear web, too. Malware, stolen data , ransomware leaks, cracked software and even abuse content are all things not exclusive to opaque .onion addresses. On large marketplaces like White House Market, listings for stolen data and malware are both widely available. “This offers an opportunity for criminals who don’t know each other to find common ground in a ‘secure’ way through forums and marketplaces to trade their ill-gotten goods.”
